I’ve always been athletic in some way: Running, biking, rollerblading, strength training, swimming, etc. I was never a pound over weight but as a teenager and in my twenties I exercised because I wanted to be “skinny”. These obsessions lead me to bulimia, an emotional and eating disorder. In 2000 I left Germany for a job as an optician in NYC. Over the years I have been a member of Bally’s, YMCA and Blink while always looking for that perfect body. About 6 years ago I fell in love with compound exercises and the results I was getting. I feel stronger not only physically but mentally and it felt really good. I was enjoying my workout routine of lifting and cardio but there was that hype called “CrossFit”. I was very intrigued but damn, was that expense plus committing to a specific schedule, this was challenging for me as a full-time working mom of three. Then exactly a year ago fate took its turn when I got an apartment right across the street from CrossFit Built Quick and Explosive. I couldn’t believe it. This was a my little dream come true! Yes, I was nervous and the moment I stepped into that box I knew this would be my new addiction. I can’t even describe how the CF Built Quick and Explosive community (coaches and members), classes and workouts have made me feel. The rewards are beyond my expectations. I have hit some more than satisfying back squat-/ dead-lift- and bench press Personal Record’s through amazing coaching (love you all!), and dying during a Metabolic Conditioning with mostly younger athletes is the climax of each day. I have found my sanctuary and a new, big family and hope it will never change because I’m just getting started….

I was always the weak kid back in school. You know the type, the one everyone knows they can push around. I was a scrawny kid with no muscle definition, poor upper body strength, lack of coordination etc. Basically, the typical 100 LB weakling.
Over the years I’ve been trying to get stronger and stronger. I’ve tried various workouts, different workout apps, programs, etc. I even went to a Bootcamp and hired a personal trainer for a month at the local Bally Fitness Club. One day, I stumbled across CrossFit though I never went because I always thought there was no way I’d be able to handle it. About a year ago, I saw an Ad on Facebook for a CrossFit Built Quick and Explosive introductory class. I decided right then and there to try because what do I have to lose? I may as well try it out.
I went and met the coaches. From the moment I walked in, they noticed I was a beginner, so they scaled everything down and were extremely accommodating and friendly! I was pleasantly surprised.
CrossFit has been a life changer. I’ve tried many different programs and none ever offered the scalability that CrossFit does at the same price points. The boot camps where too intense without taking into account people falling behind and the personal training was too expensive. Every single time I attend a CrossFit Built Quick and Explosive class I see improvement in something. I never thought this would be possible.
I am very thankful that CrossFit Built Quick and Explosive was the box I stumbled in. The community here is great! Everyone is friendly and the coaches help and scale the best they can. They accommodate all skill levels and really work with you as an individual. I am very happy I chose them. Again, this has really changed my life and my outlook about health and fitness.

If I had to describe my lifestyle it would be, books, sports and career.
I was born and raised in Ecuador. I have a degree in International Business and Finance and moved to United States three years ago. I love to travel and explore new places and I like the feeling of adrenaline, hence the reason, at times, I practice extreme sports.
I’m currently focused on my own business. I am a strict person, professionally speaking, and I dislike routine in my life. This is one of the reasons why I think CrossFit is a sport that perfectly matches my personality. I’m passionate about books and have a deep love of reading. I can easily get lost through the pages of a book for hours.
More than a year ago I went through one of the toughest decisions I’ve ever made. Back at the time I was scared and unsure about my future. At that moment a phrase by Carol Dweck came to mind “becoming is better than been”. I found it very helpful and I decided to buy and run what is now Bogaty Bagels in Brooklyn. Once again my life was suddenly a series of ups and downs and I had to start from scratch. My new business consumed most of my spare time. Months later I decided to get back to my sporting lifestyle and googled “CrossFit around me”. I’d already known about this kind of sport back in my home country years before but I’d never imagined CrossFit Built Quick and Explosive would change my life. The crucial moment came when I decided to sign up for the Competition Class. I’ve seen myself improving little by little with the support of every coach and it is truly amazing. I’ve developed a habit that has changed my life both physically and mentally. The happiest moment of my day is when I enter the box.

I started CrossFit in 2015 in Philly and it was an immediate wake up call. My first class had the CrossFit benchmark FRAN and it took me about 15 minutes longer than two of the top athletes. In the first round of the workout, I couldn’t pick up my empty barbell anymore and had to switch to dumbbells. Low and behold, I slowly but surely began feeling results and could see how much stronger I was getting. More importantly, I became more comfortable with the people in the gym and less embarrassed to fail.
After moving to New York I knew if I was going to reach my fitness goals, I needed to find another CrossFit gym – so I found CrossFit Built Quick and Explosive which brought stability back to my life.
CrossFit Built Quick and Explosive is the third ‘box’ that I’ve been a part of and has so far been the best. It has everything a box should have: coaches that care, a welcoming community, and dogs (literally every box I’ve attended has had a dog). I love attending Built Quick and Explosive because it is pure and simple fun. It is the most fun part of my day and is sometimes the only part of my day where I can be exactly who I am and be comfortable with that.
I compare myself to the only competitor that matters: me. It doesn’t matter what anyone else is doing, or how much they are lifting, as long as I am doing my best, attempting to lift more or sometimes just completing the workout.
CrossFit makes you realize that everyone has their strengths and everyone has their weaknesses. There was a time I couldn’t pick up a bar so when I see someone else unable to pick up a bar I know that one day they will. And when I see someone lift a hundred pounds more than me, I know that someday I could.
When you are surrounded by a community cheering you on and empowering you, like the one at Built Quick and Explosive, it really isn’t about how you look or how much you can lift because you are exactly where you should be, doing exactly what you should be doing -you’re with people who will accept you whether you’re lifting 45 or 450 pounds. I look forward to continuing my journey here surrounded by the incredible people that inspire me to do better and be better.
I thought the best part of CrossFit would be the physical results, but it’s really been the incredible people I’m surrounded by who inspire and empower me to do better and be better.

I’ve never thought in a million years that I would ever be into CrossFit. I’ve heard from friends that the workouts were tough and I believed I would never be able to keep up with that type of physical activity. I was invited by a friend to try out a class at a CrossFit box. I remember it feeling challenging, but it was what I was looking for. I decided to find a convenient location to my home and job, and stumbled across CrossFit Built Quick and Explosive. I tried one of their free introduction classes. I felt a warm welcome by the coaches and members alike. Immediately I signed up for a three-month membership and have never once regretted it. I love CrossFit Built Quick and Explosive. The coaches are absolutely wonderful. They are friendly, attentive, and instruct you on proper form. They are knowledgeable and always willing to answer questions or help in anyway they can. I’ve never felt intimidated by the workouts because I workout at my own fitness level. All workouts can be scaled and still be challenging. I’ve learned a lot about proper technique and
I continue to learn. I have been a consistent member for 10 months and I am a lot stronger because of it. Thank you CrossFit Built Quick and Explosive for becoming part of my daily routine, I feel as if I would be lost without CrossFit Built Quick and Explosive!

“It is never too late to be who you might have been’
– George Eliot.
My name William Petrie and I am 38 years old. At my age, I feel that I am just starting a lifestyle that I supposed to have had years ago and it is all because of CrossFit. I started CrossFit just a year ago. I remember how intimidating it was when I started. Just watching all the intense work outs and strong athletes but I love pushing myself and now I am so addicted that I go to CrossFit 5 days a week. I find CrossFit to be more effective than going to a regular gym and that is because I am being forced to work out my entire body and not just want I what I am already strong at. It also helps me to have much more endurance for playing Volleyball. My favorite thing about CrossFitBuilt Quick and Explosive is both the members and coaches. I love that every time I go to a class I learn something new from the coach and the competition that other members bring. It pushes me be a better athlete. It is so nice to have a coach there at every class that pushes and believes in me that I can do better than what I think I can. I also enjoy that everyone is friendly and there to help each other out. There are no elite members that look
down on others, but a group of veterans that encourage me to continue on so hopefully one day I can go as fast and as hard as they can. I always encourage people to try CrossFit because they will not really see how beneficial it is until they start doing it. Regardless of age, body type, and fitness experience, I think CrossFit is the way to go. CrossFit isn’t just a workout, it is a lifestyle.

When I joined CrossFit Built Quick and Explosive I found it very welcoming and felt at home and the community is like family. Training at Built Quick and Explosive impacted my life outside of the gym in general, it helps me cope with society and continued state of mind of trying to be positive in all aspects of life. I find that working hard will help you achieve your goals which is a metaphor I feel is very applicable at CrossFit Built Quick and Explosive. CrossFit Built Quick and Explosive meets the health and fitness needs its also a place where I find the community always has space to workout. The coaches are available to speak towards nutrition or how to do a particular movement more efficiently. Any and all classes are fun to do because I get to jump in with friends and what more fun than that. During open gym I do my own programming and the space is always clean and equipment well maintained. My favorite CrossFit Built Quick and Explosive memory was being able to wear my shirt in Canada at the UG Series – WheelWod in this very same photo and represented CrossFit Built Quick and Explosive. My favorite part of CrossFit Built Quick and Explosive is the Infinite things to “suck at” but work on!
If asked to sum up Built Quick and Explosive in one word or phrase, what would it be “FAMILY or HOME”!

My name is Jaime Spataro I am 28 years old, born and raised in Queens, NY. I have always been extremely active from a young age where my parents threw me into as many sports as they could to try and have me burn off all my energy. I am an Environmental Engineer for DnB engineers. I went to Manhattan College for my undergrad and managers degrees in Environmental Engineering where I also competed on the D1 Track team.
I have been doing crossfit for 5 years now. I first got started with crossfit because I had my knee reconstructed and needed a way of getting my strength and range of motion back up to par. I saw a groupon for classes at a box and decided to dive in and immediately fell in love with the movements, pain, atmosphere and community. When I graduated college I didn’t have the structured training regime I was used to having from my track coaches in college, or the facility to perform athletic movements or Olympic lifting. My friends and I would just go to the local globo gym and body-build which became humdrum and boring making me not want to go to the gym. Once I discovered crossfit the structure, purpose and challenges for going to the gym came back and I began to enjoy working out again.
I use crossfit as a way to keep myself in shape physical and mentally for the sports I play ice hockey and Australian football.

I am old enough to no longer get carded. I grew up on Long Island and have lived in Florida and Barcelona. I have lived in Ridgewood for the last few years. I’m a Leo/Cancer and an ISTP. I love and miss summer! I have never been involved in sports unless you count mini-golf. I love exploring this city and traveling anywhere and everywhere.
Jessica was always trying to convince me to join CrossFit. I thought she was crazy to suggest it and that CrossFit was outside the realm of my capabilities. When Built Quick and Explosive opened, I joined thinking I would just try it for the month. So that was back in July. Now I love everything about it and am so grateful for the incredibly strong (physically and mentally) people I’ve met here.
I work for a mortgage company and teach ESL part-time.

My name is Demetria Comer I am a BedStuy Native. I am A single mother of one. My daughter DeShae’ is a college sophomore I can’t ever go without mentioning her because I can’t imagine what life would be without her. The thought of her puts a smile on my face. I am a Data Analyst at NYU Lutheran where I’ve been employed for 15 years. I love all things pink and purple. I’m a chocolate lover, and a tea connoisseur.
For personal reasons I terminated my YMCA membership where I was accustomed group exercise classes and joined my local Blink and Planet Fitness which had no classes. Although I was consistent and maintained my weight loss I knew it wasn’t enough. A friend of mine who admired my consistency and dedication to fitness decided that he too wanted to get fit. He came across the new CrossFit Built Quick and Explosive in his neighborhood of Bushwick and joined. I told him to keep me posted as I supported and cheered him on. So He’d send me pictures of the daily WOD and describe the movements in detail. I thought the workouts were insane but I wanted to do them. I did some additional research because I was familiar with CrossFit but didn’t know much, I never considered joining one until then. I started two weeks after him and I’ve never looked back. One of the best decisions I’ve ever made.

Danielle Gagliardotto, 26 years old, born and raised in Queens, NY. I enjoy working out and trying new ways to stay active (mainly so I don’t feel guilty about being a foodie!), traveling, reading, and most importantly spending time with my family and friends.
What got you interested in CrossFit?
I started CrossFit in 2014 with my brother who was looking for a new/different way to get fit and healthy. It was something he wanted to take up for a while and I had a few friends who were CrossFitting at the time, but I didn’t know much about the sport and its programming. With that said I was a little skeptical in the beginning, but my brother was able to talk me into an intro session and a ten-class package which ultimately ended up turning into three years and one of the best decisions I’ve ever made. I have been hooked ever since!
